#51 Venice One

“#51 Venice One” is a stunning monochromatic exploration of Venice’s unique landscape. Robert Higham employs Japanese ink in varying shades of black and grey to capture the elegance and mystery of the city’s waterways. “We had only been to Venice once in our lives and were absolutely enchanted by the little rivers, the canals, and all these kinds of water connections. Everything is on the water. The mirroring, the reflections, and these incredibly beautiful buildings and works of art. Yes, we were truly flabbergasted. And so I decided to take a photo or make a sketch of one part with a bridge going over a little river, a little canal.

I rendered this in sepia and also in black. These were Japanese inks, very, very differentiated with high pigment, although they are inks. And I painted the same motif twice, once in black and greys and the other in sepia browns, naturally employing a few colours from the acral palette of Igor Trestoy. This is a Russian company, highly pigmented. I also used my sable hair brushes, and of course, the Japanese brushes too.”

“Wir waren nur einmal in Venedig und waren von den kleinen Flüssen, den Kanälen und all diesen Wasserverbindungen absolut begeistert. Alles ist auf dem Wasser. Die Spiegelungen, die Reflektionen und diese unglaublich schönen Gebäude und die Kunstwerke. Ja, wir waren wirklich verblüfft. Und so beschloss ich, ein Foto zu machen oder eine Skizze von einem Teil mit einer Brücke über einem kleinen Fluss, einem kleinen Kanal, anzufertigen.

Ich habe das in Sepia und auch in Schwarz gemacht. Diese waren japanische Tinten, sehr, sehr differenziert mit dem hohen Pigment, obwohl sie Tinten sind. Und ich habe das gleiche Motiv zweimal gemalt, einmal in Schwarz und Grautönen und das andere in Sepia-Brauntönen, wobei ich natürlich auch einige Farben aus den Aquarellfarben von Igor Trestoy verwendet habe. Es ist eine russische Firma, hochpigmentiert. Und ich habe auch meine Pinsel aus Zobelhaar verwendet. Und natürlich auch die japanischen Pinsel.
